Creation Entertainment Stargate Convention
August 2004

Bringing a little kid to a con is like bringing a puppy to the park. The guests are really attentive to the little ones, which was definitely the case at this one. He was only six at the time, sniff sniff. However, it's not without its negatives; I haven't brought him to a con since! He just didn't have the patience to sit through the panels or wait in line for the photo ops. Though it was an experience I hope he never forgets. Both my kids are Stargate fans. At the time, my youngest son's favorite character is Teal'c (at other times it was O'Neill and Hammond).

We were at the front desk checking in when I heard a familiar deep voice in line next to us. A quick glance at his backside (oops, did I type that?) confirmed that it was Christopher Judge. I whispered to my son, "honey, look who's next to us". He looks over, his jaw drops, and he literally climbs up me and buries his head in my neck. His big moment and he hides.

I had made myself an SG1 costume from a jacket bought at an Army-Navy store, green pants from a sporting goods store, and black boots from Payless. I had also made a mini SG1 jacket for my son, and with a gold metallic marker bought at a craft store, painted Tealc's Jaffa symbol on his forehead. When we got there, I realized we were the only ones in costume! Which worked out to our benefit, a news team showed up and interviewed us for the local news. Cute.

That night we had tickets to the dessert party. It was getting late and the guests had not gotten there. My son just coudn't hold out any longer, so I headed out carrying him to the hotel room. Out in the hallway we ran into Chris, Don, and Tony. They were so cool they all said goodnight to him.

Next morning we went to the charity breakfast. The guy from Creation says to me "put your son on your lap, I'm going to have Michael Shanks sit next to you". Holy crap!  When Michael sit down my son refuses to look at him, even putting his head down on the table! (see photos below). Ironically, or maybe by design, the person at our table that took the photos was from United Fan Con, a con that I had just gone to twice in the preceeding year.

Now what I find out after this, is that my son had no problem talking to the girls. During Teryl Rothery's panel he decided he had a question. He stands in line at the microphone waiting his turn (I am in tears, dying because I can't believe it). He gets up to the mic and asks "when you died (Dr. Frasier), why didn't they put you in the sarcophagus?". So the kid can't say hi to Chris or Mike, but he'll get up in front of hundreds of people to ask Teryl a question. He was also a bit chatty with Rachel Lutrell. A ladies man, apparently.

If you've never seen Christopher Judge at a con before, you're in for a surprise. He began his panel by saying, "I have to apologize in advance, I have ADHD and a mild form of Turrets, so I tend to forget what I'm talking about and say things before I think..." He wasn't kidding. He is completely opposite his character on SG1. How he can stand so still and expressionless as Teal'c is beyond me. He loves to tell stories about pranks on the set, and most of them have to do with the bathroom. There was a story about him and Richard Dean Anderson having fart competitions by eating certain foods. Nice.

Don Davis was so very humble up on stage. He spoke about his fellow actors from SG1 with tears in his eyes. So soft spoken and kind.
